Livestock & Pasture Assistant

Hedgerow of Soquel is a diverse 6 acre permaculture garden, farm, and homestead in Soquel. We are seeking a driven and holistically minded individual to manage our our diverse collection of animals and pastures. This position will oversee all aspects of the animals daily care.

Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • This is hourly position is structured as a 4-day/week position, 7:00 AM – 10 AM. 
  • Responsible for any and all livestock needs.
  • Performs daily tasks including, but not limited to, tending to the water and food of all animals, hoof trimming, moving animals from one area to another, organizing supplies, building & moving fences, moving chicken coops, monitoring grass levels, closing chicken coop doors, and mucking stalls.
  • Our livestock & poultry are run in coordination with each other throughout the year in order to accommodate for scheduling and space requirements.
  • Assist with Mobile Coop Moves during morning animal chores including tractor work and taking down and putting up mobile fences
  • General tasks such as deep clean of coop, checking on animal’s well-being, making sure poultry’s basic needs are met, general coop maintenance, etc.
  • Perform and coordinate daily milking and milk processing, and occasional meat harvest.
  • Inventory and order all livestock related items which need to be kept in stock including feeding, cleaning, supplements, and equipment.
  • Make recommendations for livestock management based on observations, best practices, and holistic animal care principals. 
  • Perform weed whacking, mowing, fertilizer application, cultivating, irrigation, remove invasive & toxic plants, and continually work to improve forage pastures.
  • Provide daily email updates to owner, supervisor, and other team members
  • Assess animal enclosures for safety issues, breaches, pests, and structural integrity
  • Responsible for training and overseeing the work of WWOOFer assistants as related to livestock & pastures.
  • Support the farm’s needs outside of all core responsibilities, including, but not limited to, irrigation work, supporting the needs of the orchards, building structures, installing and repairing fencing, tractor operation, running errands and addressing reasonable requests by Farm Management.

Education & Experience: 

  • Sincere passion for animal and human welfare, ecologically sound farming practices, and progressive holistic approaches to food system management (especially soil!)
  • PREFERRED 6 months to a year farm experience
  • Must live within 30 minutes of the Farm
  • Potential opportunity to live on the farm may be available with additional responsibilities.
  • Comfortable adhering to naturopathic principals for animal care whenever possible (i.e. use of chemicals, pharmaceuticals, steroids, antibiotics, etc. is a last resort and must be approved)
  • Self-motivated, organized, and manage time efficiently
  • Punctual and reliable
  • Must live within 30 minutes of the Farm
  • Potential opportunity to live on the farm may be available with additional responsibilities.


This position has a pay range of $15.00 to $18.00 per hour depending on experience. Note: This is a physically strenuous job.
